Autumn in Subirans i el Montnegre

With the start of autumn comes a lot of excitement! The kids love collecting leaves to take to school and the adults look forward to eating mushrooms, which grow wild in the beautiful forests surrounding Barcelona. With this in mind we decided to take a walk in the mountains and soak in everything this season has to offer, including the gastronomic delights!

We went to the Parc Natural del Montnegre i el Corredor, north of Barcelona and inland from the Maresme Coast. This natural park has various access points and we arrived via Arenys de Munt, which is easy to find. Follow the road, Carretera Lourdes, that takes you to Riera, in the direction of Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, where you will also find a leafy picnic and BBQ area and some restaurants. Continue along this road in the direction of Subirans. Once you reach the forest area you’ll find it easy to park and begin your walk along one of the many of trails.

The kids had a great time seeing the mushrooms, collecting leaves, flowers, pinecones, acorns, and running and playing freely. And us adults had a wonderful time walking through nature and unloading the stress of the week. Once we started to notice our tummies grumbling we headed down to Subirans Restaurant, which is a 100% Mammaproof!

It is a Catalan country house where you can eat traditional dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, it is the perfect place to try rovellons, llanegues, and rossinyols –mushrooms which can be found in the local forests, although we didn’t have luck finding any on our walk!

It is a great spot, easy to park and it has a large terrace with lots of toys, which includes a chalkboard, books and little tables. They also have stroller/push chair friendly ramp, a baby changing area, and friendly wait staff who were very sweet to the kids and ended up giving them ChupaChups (Spanish lollipops!). All this made our visit extra special and we were able to enjoy our delicious meal while the kids had fun playing! And in the case of rain, they pull out a canopy so you can still enjoy your meal outside, in the fresh air.

Lastly, the restaurant’s neighbours have a small collection of animals which include donkeys, goats, sheep, swans and ducks, and although you can only see these over the side of the wall, the children just love it!

So if you want to spend a beautiful (Mammaproof!) autumn day out in nature you know where to go, highly recommended! Enjoy!
